April is National Volunteer Month

April is volunteer month, and Spokane Mayor David Condon and members of his Cabinet kicked it off by participating in three service projects Tuesday as part of National Mayor’s Day of Service. Projects included:

  • YouthBuild, whose mission is to rebuild low-income neighborhoods by engaging local youth in these efforts. The mayor and his Cabinet worked on a fence and shed in the backyard of a house built by Habitat For Humanity and YouthBuild volunteers. The national AmeriCorps director attended the event.
  • The Women and Children’s Free Restaurant and Community Kitchen. The mayor and his Cabinet sorted food and washed dishes. This Community Kitchen prepares more than 500 meals weekly and promotes nutritious eating habits for women and children in need.
  • Crosswalk, an emergency shelter for homeless teens. The mayor and his Cabinet worked side-by-side with teens to paint over graffiti in the neighborhood.
