Classified and Exempt Positions

What is a classified position? Classified positions are covered by the civil service system, which means that applicants are determined to be qualified based on their ability to do the job and their job-related qualifications. The hiring process for these positions involves competitive testing to ensure non-merit factors (anything other than ability/qualifications) are avoided. This process is in place to keep city jobs open to anyone and to help ensure that the City has a qualified workforce. There are both Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) status exempt and non-exempt opportunities within the civil service system. Please scroll down to see current career opportunities.

So, then what exactly is an exempt position? Exempt positions, as referenced on the jobs page, are politically appointed positions and are outside of the civil service system. Exempt in this case does not necessarily reflect FLSA status. These positions are hired through the Human Resources department and are not reflected in the postings below.

Performs responsible supervisory work and/or specialized professional plan examination work in connection with reviewing plans and specifications of proposed buildings and structures and site development for conformance with City Building and Fire Codes and accepted engineering practices.

This position pays $83,812.30 annual salary, payable bi-weekly, to a maximum of $115,258.00

Police Officer

Candidates who have taken and passed the Public Safety Testing, Inc. Law Enforcement Exam and have sent their scores to City of Spokane will be invited to apply for the position of Police Officer. PST score must be less than one year old. 

This position pays $48,587.80 annual salary, payable bi-weekly, to a maximum of $84,459.60

Police Records Specialist
